Watch Care

Mechanical watches are built to withstand the test of time. For approximately 500 years, these timepieces have been with us – some as an investment, others to pass on to future generations, and others to be inherited.

Proper care and maintenance of your mechanical watch will allow it to run for decades or even centuries while keeping its value. At Konstantyn Boyajian, we recommend taking care of your mechanical watches. You can read more about proper watch care below.

A proper fit

A Proper Fit

Watch models and sizes change from one brand to another, so properly fitting your watch is a must. You should give three things attention: (1) tightness, (2) looseness, (3) centeredness. A watch that is too tight for too long can affect the blood flow in your wrist, while too loose will prematurely wear out your bracelet links. An uncentered timepiece will push the watch to either side of your wrist, causing discomfort.

For your watch to have a proper fit it should be a bit loose on the wrist but not too loose so that the watch turns on the wrist. It should be adjusted to be aligned with the watch and bracelet deployment buckle.

Regular Winding

All mechanical watches (self-winding or manual-winding) use oil as a lubricant. To keep your timepiece in excellent working condition, even when you are not using it, you should wind it every three weeks; this will keep the movement component lubricated and extend the service period.

Periodic Check-up & Services

All Mechanical and Quartz watches need to be checked periodically for water-resistance. This check should be done every two to three years, including the case back, crown and pushers, and all the seals. This is because seals are exposed to temperature changes causing the seals to expand and contract, causing wear and tear. All of this will ensure that your watch is protected from water, humidity, and dust.

Magnetic Fields

Exposing your mechanical watches to magnetic fields can cause timepieces to run faster, slower or stop altogether. But today, most high-end watch brands use an antimagnetic alloy that can withstand everyday magnetic fields. In case your watch is magnetized, we can perform a simple demagnetizing press.

Swimming with Water Resistant Watches

Know your watch before swimming. Your watch must comply with Swiss standard NIHS 92-11, which is equivalent to ISO standards for water. ISO 6425 is specific to dive watches and NIHS 92-20 is equivalent to ISO 22810, which is for all other models. Besides that, ensure that you have checked your crown and pushers – these should not be activated while Swimming. Lastly, after every swim in saltwater, rinse your watch with fresh water.
